Lesson 2: MVP Validation

Test the Entire Hypothesis in One Weekend

Lesson Navigation

← Course Index Next Lesson →

⚠️ The $10K Mistake

Most people spend months building infrastructure before validating demand. They create websites, register LLCs, design logos, build complex systems... then discover nobody wants what they're selling.

This lesson prevents that.

The MVP Validation Principle

Test your ENTIRE business hypothesis in ONE WEEKEND with $200 and zero infrastructure.

What You'll Validate

  • Can you find books that meet your filter? (Discovery works)
  • Can you reach authors? (Contact info exists)
  • Do authors care about counterfeiting? (Pain is real)
  • Will they engage with free tools? (Value proposition resonates)

What You'll Build This Weekend

  1. Free Author Portal - Simple reader hub with contact form (2-3 hours)
  2. Honest Dashboard Metrics - URL sharing proof, not fake QR scans (30 min)
  3. Batch QR System Understanding - How tracking actually works (15 min)
  4. Multi-Channel Outreach - Age-appropriate contact strategy (1 hour)

Investment Required

  • Time: 18 hours over one weekend
  • Money: ~$200 (portal domain, postcard printing)
  • Risk: Near zero - you're testing before building

Build a Free Author Portal with Honest Dashboard

🚨 CRITICAL CORRECTION

What Was Wrong: Original lesson promised "89 QR scans in 30 days" when books in circulation have NO QR codes yet.

Reality: You can't have scans from books without codes. Dashboard must be HONEST about starting at zero.

❌ Wrong Version (From Original Lesson):

30 Days Later:
Author sees dashboard:
- 89 readers scanned QR code
- 12 sent messages
- 31 joined email list

✅ Corrected Version (Honest):

Dashboard Day 1 (Honest):
- 0 QR scans (no books with codes printed yet)
- 0 direct visits (share URL to get traffic)

Instructions for Author:
"Share your portal URL now with readers via:
- Email newsletter
- Social media
- Author website
- Book club presentations

QR codes are ready for your next print run."

Success Metric (30 days):
- 5-20 visits from URL sharing
- Proves reader interest BEFORE reprinting investment

Why This Matters

Honest metrics build trust with older authors who are deeply skeptical. Starting at zero and showing organic growth is MORE impressive than inflated numbers.

Platform Cost Pros Best For
Carrd.co $19/year Dead simple, templates, custom domain Non-technical, fastest setup
Vercel + HTML Free Full control, unlimited sites Technical, want to scale
Notion Free Zero setup, built-in forms Absolute fastest (5 min)

Recommendation: Carrd.co

Best balance of professional appearance, ease of use, and custom domain support. Takes 30 minutes even if you've never built a website.

Essential Portal Sections:

Example Portal Copy:

Welcome to Your Reader Hub

Dear [BOOK TITLE] readers,

This portal is your direct connection to updated content,
errata, and ways to reach me about the book.

This is completely free - no sign-up required to browse.

What's Here:
- Updated content and bonus material
- Verified purchase information (avoid counterfeit copies)
- Direct message form to reach me
- Email updates (optional)

This portal is provided by Swift Bind Author Services as
a free tool to help preserve access to out-of-print and
under-distributed books.

Why Free? Simple: We help authors first, build relationships
second. If you ever need help with distribution or reprinting,
you'll remember we were here. If not, you still got a useful
tool. That's how business should work.

- TJ Brama, Swift Bind (Est. 2009)

Recommended Domain Structure:

authorname.swiftbind.com

Domain Setup Steps:

✅ "Good Enough" Completion Criteria

  • Portal is live at custom domain (authorname.swiftbind.com)
  • All 6 essential sections present
  • Contact form works (test by sending yourself a message)
  • Dashboard shows HONEST metrics (0 scans, instructions to share URL)
  • Transparency disclosure visible and genuine
  • Portal loads on mobile and desktop

How QR Tracking Actually Works (Batch System)

🚨 CRITICAL CORRECTION

What Was Wrong: Original lesson described individual book tracking (Book #1847 gets unique code).

Reality: Can't track individual books through Amazon FBA. Inventory gets mixed. Logistics nightmare.

  • Amazon FBA mixes inventory from different shipments
  • No way to track "which specific book went where"
  • Would require complex logistics system ($50K+ to build)
  • Defeats entire purpose of Amazon fulfillment

The Original Bad Idea

Print 1,000 books, each with unique QR code (book-1, book-2, book-3...). Track which book ships to which customer. Detect counterfeit if same book scans in two places.

Problem: Impossible to implement at scale.

How It Works:

Print Run A (January 2026):
- 1,000 copies printed
- Shipped to: Amazon FBA East Coast warehouse
- QR Code: swiftbind.com/title/batch-A
- All 1,000 books get SAME code

Print Run B (March 2026):
- 1,000 copies printed
- Shipped to: Amazon FBA West Coast warehouse
- QR Code: swiftbind.com/title/batch-B
- All 1,000 books get SAME code

How This Catches Counterfeits:

Detection Method How It Works Example
Geographic Anomalies Batch A scans from regions it never shipped to Batch A (East Coast only) gets scans from Mumbai = counterfeit
Volume Impossibilities More scans than books printed 1,000 books printed, 2,000 scans = 1,000 fakes in circulation
Temporal Anomalies Scans before print date Batch B printed March 2026, scans from January 2026 = counterfeit

Why This Works

You don't need to track individual books. You need to detect PATTERNS that indicate counterfeiting. Batch system gives you that without complex logistics.

✅ "Good Enough" Completion Criteria

  • You understand why individual book tracking is impossible
  • You can explain the batch/lot system to someone else
  • You know the 3 detection methods: geographic, volume, temporal
  • You can explain this system to an author without confusing them

Weekend Validation: Contact 10 Authors

Goal of This Exercise

Validate that authors will engage with your free offer. You're testing:

  • Can you find contact info?
  • Do they open your message?
  • Do they click the portal link?
  • Does counterfeit angle resonate?

Use Keepa + your Blue Ocean filter from Lesson 1:

Keepa Search Criteria:

For each of your 10 books, find contact info via:

Method Where to Look Success Rate
Author Website Google "[Author Name] author website" 40-50%
LinkedIn Search author name, look for email in profile 30-40%
Publisher Records Book copyright page lists publisher, Google publisher contact 20-30%
Hunter.io Email finder tool (free tier: 25 searches/month) 50-60%

Realistic Expectations

You'll find contact info for 5-7 out of 10 authors. This is normal. If you can't find contact for someone, skip and move to next book.

Email Template (Copy & Personalize):

Subject: Counterfeit issue with [BOOK TITLE]

Dear [AUTHOR NAME],

I came across [BOOK TITLE] while researching theology/business
books and noticed something concerning: there are currently
[NUMBER] sellers on Amazon offering your book, several with
suspicious characteristics (new accounts, generic names,
ships from overseas).

Based on their sales volume and pricing, I estimate these
unauthorized sellers may have moved [XXX] copies in the
last 90 days.

I've created a free counterfeit monitoring report for your
book that tracks these sellers. No cost, no catch - I just
thought you'd want to know.

You can view the report here: [LINK]

Also, I've set up a free reader portal for your book at
[authorname.swiftbind.com] - it's a simple hub where
readers can verify their copy is authentic, get updates,
and contact you. Again, completely free.

Why am I doing this for free? Simple: I'm building
relationships with authors whose work I respect. If you
ever need help with distribution or reprinting, you'll
remember I was helpful. If not, you got useful tools
and I helped preserve good work.

Let me know if you'd like me to explain more.

Critical: Personalize Each Email

  • Replace [BOOK TITLE], [AUTHOR NAME]
  • Actually COUNT the sellers on Amazon
  • Make a real estimate of copies moved
  • Mention something specific about their book

Don't send generic mail merge. Older authors spot it instantly and delete.

Sending Checklist:

What to Track (Weekend Validation):

Metric Good Result What It Means
Open Rate 40-60% Your subject line works, authors care about counterfeiting
Portal Click 20-40% Value proposition resonates, they want to see the portal
Reply Rate 10-20% They're engaged, want to learn more

✅ "Good Enough" Completion Criteria

  • 10 emails sent to real authors with real books
  • Each email personalized (not generic template)
  • Tracking enabled (know who opens, clicks)
  • Simple spreadsheet logging results
  • At least 2-3 opens in first 48 hours (validates subject line)

Multi-Channel Outreach: Reaching 70+ Authors

⚠️ NEW: Age-Appropriate Channel Selection

Email-only approach misses 70+ demographic. Many older authors don't check email daily or are skeptical of digital-only outreach.

Solution: Multi-channel strategy based on author age.

Age Range Primary Channel Secondary Channel Why
40-60 Email Phone (if no response) Digital-savvy, checks email regularly
60-75 Email + Postcard Phone follow-up Hybrid digital/physical, appreciates tangible mail
75+ Physical Letter Phone (2 weeks later) Prefers physical mail, skeptical of email-only outreach

How to Determine Author Age

  • Wikipedia / author bio pages
  • LinkedIn profile
  • Book publication date + "first book" assumption (~age 40 at first pub)
  • Google "[Author] age" or "[Author] born"

Dear [AUTHOR NAME],

I found these sellers printing fake copies of your book:

1. XHDJK_Store (47 sold) - Account created 3 weeks ago
2. BookFast_USA (31 sold) - Ships from China, poor quality
3. RapidShip (22 sold) - Generic name, no seller history

Critical: Use REAL Data

Don't make up seller names or numbers. Actually:

  • Go to Amazon, find the book
  • Click "Other Sellers"
  • Screenshot or document actual seller names
  • Estimate sales from feedback count
  • Calculate revenue (copies × price)

The 3x Conversion Hack

When author is 80+, don't just contact the author. Contact:

  1. The Author - Physical letter (handwritten envelope)
  2. Spouse - Find via obituary search (living spouse listed), LinkedIn
  3. Adult Children - LinkedIn search "[Author Last Name]", look for 50-60 year olds

Why This Works: When multiple family members see your message, someone follows up. Conversion 3x higher than author-only outreach.

How to Find Family Members:

Message Variation for Family:

Subject: Your father's book - counterfeit issue

Dear [FAMILY MEMBER],

I'm reaching out about your father's book "[BOOK TITLE]".

I've been monitoring the used book market and noticed
several unauthorized sellers offering his book. Based on
sales volume, I estimate these counterfeiters have moved
approximately [XXX] copies in recent months.

I've created a free counterfeit monitoring report and reader
portal for the book. No cost - I just thought your family
should know.

If your father is still active with his literary work, I'd
be happy to share these tools with him. If the family is
managing his estate/legacy, this might be useful for you.

his literary legacy, you'll remember we were helpful.
