Architecture Decision Record — Strategy, Roadmap & Justification — v1.0 — February 2026

This ADR captures the WHY behind every architectural decision in the ContentEngine PRD. The PRD stays prescriptive (WHAT to build). The Human Guide stays practical (HOW to do human parts). This document provides narrative justification so decisions can be revisited without re-deriving from first principles.
1. Why n8n Workflows Instead of Custom Backend
1.1 The Problem
ContentEngine needs to orchestrate 6 automated processes: scraping, reply generation, digest delivery, reply posting, post scoring, and performance tracking. The conventional approach would be a FastAPI or Express backend with cron jobs. But we're building for a single operator (Jason) during Brad sprint crunch — every hour spent on infrastructure is an hour not spent on revenue-generating expert deployment.

1.2 The Decision
- All automation as n8n workflows. Six workflows handle the complete scrape → generate → approve → post cycle.
- No custom backend at all. LLM calls made directly from n8n HTTP Request nodes. Database operations via Supabase nodes.
- n8n instance already exists. Zero additional infrastructure cost. Already proven stable for MasteryMade operations.
- Expert replication = workflow duplication. When deploying for Brad or future experts, duplicate the 6 workflows and swap the credential set. 15-minute deployment per expert.
1.3 Alternatives Rejected
- FastAPI + Cron Jobs: The CreatorBuddy blueprint's recommended approach. Rejected because it requires a dedicated server (Railway/Fly.io at $5-15/mo), Python dependency management, deployment pipeline, and monitoring. Adds ~2 weeks of build time for functionally identical results. Build later (Phase 4) only if SaaS UI is needed.
- OpenClaw Agent Framework: The blueprint suggests persistent AI agents for each feature. Rejected because OpenClaw is a new framework (161K stars but immature tooling), requires a VPS running 24/7, and adds complexity without proportional value for a single-operator system. Revisit when multi-agent orchestration is actually needed.
- Claude Code Custom Skill: Build ContentEngine as a Claude skill that runs inside Claude Desktop. Rejected because it would only work inside Claude Desktop (not headless/automated), can't run on a schedule, and can't post to X proactively. The system needs to run autonomously.
2. Why Apify Instead of X API Pro ($100/mo)
2.1 The Problem
ContentEngine needs to read tweets from ~20 target accounts daily. X API Free tier is write-only. X API Pro ($100/mo) allows 10,000 reads/month. Apify scrapers provide equivalent data at $0.40/1,000 tweets. The cost difference is 50-100x.
2.2 The Decision
- Apify Tweet Scraper for all read operations. ~3,000 tweets/month = ~$1.20/mo vs $100/mo for X API Pro.
- X API Free tier for write-only. Posting replies and original content. 1,500 posts/month limit is sufficient.
- Accept TOS risk at personal volume. Apify scraping technically violates X's TOS, but at <50 accounts and <5,000 tweets/month, enforcement risk is negligible for personal use. No bulk data resale.
2.3 Alternatives Rejected
- X API Pro ($100/mo): Official and reliable, but the cost alone exceeds CreatorBuddy's $49/mo subscription — defeating the purpose of building vs buying. Only justified at multi-tenant SaaS scale where the cost is amortized across customers.
- X API Basic ($5,000/mo): What CreatorBuddy uses. Absurd for personal use or even small-scale multi-expert deployment.
- Chrome Extension Scraping: Free but requires a browser running 24/7, fragile DOM selectors that break with X UI updates, and can't run headless on a schedule. Explored but too brittle for production automation.
- X Data Export (user archive): Free and official but manual (user must request and download). Only useful for initial history load, not daily monitoring. May incorporate in Phase 2 for own-account history bootstrap.
2.4 Apify Risk Mitigation
If Apify scraping breaks (X blocks the actor, or Apify raises prices), the fallback chain is:
- Switch to alternate Apify actor (multiple tweet scrapers on the platform)
- Add Chrome Extension scraping as supplementary data source (Phase 4)
- Upgrade to X API Pro ($100/mo) — the math still works if ContentEngine is deployed to 3+ paying experts
3. Why Telegram for Approval Instead of a Dashboard
3.1 The Problem
The operator needs to review ~30-60 reply candidates daily and approve the best ones. This could be done via a web dashboard (Next.js), a mobile app, email, or a messaging bot.
3.2 The Decision
- Telegram bot with inline keyboard buttons. Operator receives a formatted digest, taps approve/reject on each reply candidate. 5-minute daily interaction.
- Zero UI to build. Telegram provides the interface for free. n8n has native Telegram nodes for both sending and receiving.
- Mobile-first by default. Telegram is already on the operator's phone. No new app to install, no URL to bookmark, no login flow.
3.3 Alternatives Rejected
- Next.js Dashboard: The "proper" SaaS approach. Rejected for Phase 1 because it adds 1-2 weeks of build time (auth, UI, routing, deployment) for a single operator. Build in Phase 4 when multi-expert deployment requires a shared interface.
- Email Digest: Works but has no inline approval mechanism. Operator would need to click a link, load a page, then approve. More friction than Telegram's tap-to-approve.
- Slack: Viable alternative to Telegram but requires a workspace. Telegram is lighter weight and already in daily use.
- Supabase Dashboard Direct: Operator could just toggle status in the table editor. Works as a fallback but terrible UX — requires login, navigation, finding the right row, editing a cell. Telegram is 10x faster.
4. Why Anthropic Sonnet Instead of GPT-4 or Local Models
4.1 The Problem
Reply generation and post scoring require an LLM that's good at: understanding social context, matching a writing voice, structured JSON output, and working within short-form constraints (280 chars). Cost matters because we're making 150+ API calls/day.
4.2 The Decision
- Claude Sonnet (claude-sonnet-4-20250514) for all generation tasks. Best price/quality ratio for structured creative output at ~$0.002/call.
- Single model, no cascade. Sonnet is sufficient quality for reply generation. No need for Opus-level reasoning. No need for Haiku-level cost savings at this volume.
- JSON mode via system prompt. Sonnet reliably outputs valid JSON when prompted correctly. No need for function calling or structured output schemas at this task complexity.
4.3 Alternatives Rejected
- GPT-4o / GPT-4o-mini: Comparable quality but requires a separate OpenAI account, separate billing, separate credential. Jason already has Anthropic API credits and the entire MasteryOS stack runs on Claude. Simplicity wins.
- Local models (Ollama): Zero API cost but requires a GPU server ($50+/mo) or runs slowly on CPU. Quality for voice-matched short-form content is noticeably worse than Sonnet. The $10-15/mo API cost is cheaper than self-hosting.
- Model cascade (Haiku → Sonnet → Opus): Overengineered for this volume. At 4,500 calls/month, the cost difference between Haiku and Sonnet is ~$5/mo. Not worth the routing complexity.
5. Why 3 Reply Types (Not Free-Form Generation)
5.1 The Problem
LLMs generating "a reply" tend to produce generic engagement bait. The operator needs strategically diverse options that serve different purposes.
5.2 The Decision
- Forced 3-type structure per target post: (1) Agree + Extend — validates the author's point and adds value, (2) Contrarian / Question — challenges or asks a smart question that drives conversation, (3) Personal Experience / Data — shares specific operator experience that demonstrates credibility.
- Operator picks the best fit per context. Some posts warrant agreement. Some warrant pushback. Having all three ready lets the operator be strategic about which reply serves the growth goal.
- Performance tracking by reply type. After 60 days, data reveals which type drives the most impressions, followers, and profile visits — informing strategy refinement.
5.3 Alternatives Rejected
- Single "best" reply: Forces the LLM to guess which strategy the operator wants. Often defaults to safe agreement. Removes operator agency.
- 5+ reply options: Decision fatigue at scale. 20 target posts × 5 replies = 100 options to review daily. 3 is the sweet spot between variety and efficiency.
- Fully automated posting (no approval): Tempting but dangerous. One bad AI-generated reply from "Jason MacDonald" going viral for the wrong reasons destroys months of brand building. Human-in-the-loop is non-negotiable for Phase 1. Revisit auto-posting for low-risk reply types after 90 days of quality data.
6. Cost-Benefit Analysis
6.1 Build vs Buy Comparison

6.2 Break-Even Analysis
ContentEngine costs ~$15/mo to run. If deployed as a MasteryOS content module for experts at $29/mo per expert:
- 1 expert: $29 revenue - $15 marginal cost = $14/mo profit (infrastructure covered by Jason's personal use)
- 5 experts: $145 revenue - $75 cost = $70/mo profit
- 10 experts: $290 revenue - $150 cost = $140/mo profit
Marginal cost per expert is ~$12-15/mo (additional Apify + Anthropic usage). The n8n instance and Supabase free tier are shared overhead. Break-even on the build cost ($15) happens in the first month of personal use vs the CreatorBuddy subscription ($49).
6.3 Cost Scaling Model
Costs scale linearly with number of experts but sublinearly with volume per expert. The fixed costs (n8n hosting, Supabase) are already covered. Variable costs (Apify, Anthropic) scale per-call. At 30+ experts, Supabase will exceed free tier ($25/mo) and n8n may need more resources. Cross that bridge when revenue justifies it.
Key Insight: The real value isn't saving $37/mo vs CreatorBuddy. It's that ContentEngine becomes a deployable MasteryOS module with zero additional build work per expert — just credential swaps and voice profile updates. That's the asymmetric leverage play.
7. Third-Party Dependency Risks
7.1 Apify Tweet Scraper
- Why use it: Eliminates the $100/mo X API Pro cost entirely. Provides equivalent tweet data via scraping.
- Dependency risk: X could block the scraper at any time. Apify actors are community-maintained and may break after X UI changes.
- Fallback: Multiple tweet scrapers exist on Apify (apidojo/tweet-scraper, microworlds/twitter-scraper, etc). If all fail, upgrade to X API Pro — the math works once 3+ experts are paying.
7.2 X API Free Tier
- Why use it: Write-only access is free and sufficient for posting replies.
- Dependency risk: X has historically changed API tiers, pricing, and access rules with little notice. Free tier could be deprecated.
- Fallback: X API Basic ($200/mo) if free tier disappears. Or browser automation via Apify for posting (higher TOS risk).
8. Known Limitations & Risks

9. Future Roadmap (The "Not Now" List)
9.1 Phase 2 — Post-Validation ~60 DAYS
After the reply engine proves it drives follower growth and the system has been running reliably for 60 days.
